“This quilt is a replica of a holding at the Smithsonian. “Betty West, our Negro nurse, made this quilt for my brother and me. The many stitches made by stiff old fingers shows the real love she had for the two white children entrusted to her care. I treasured the quilt and have kept it all these years in loving memory of her.” Mary C. Watkins, Oct. 24, 1939
The quilt top was made in about 1879 by Betty West who was employed by Leonides C. Campbell and his wife, Mary, as a nurse for their children, John Clement Kennedy Campbell and Mary Campbell. John was born in 1870 and was four years older that Mary, who wrote the note. She is the mother of Kennedy C. Watkins who, with his wife, donated the quilt top to the museum in 1975.”
